As the winter season comes to an end, you might have your eyes set on warmer weather, sunny days, and everything else that comes with springtime. If you’re looking forward to refreshening your space, you might also have your eyes set on organizing your garage, decluttering your closet, and deep cleaning your kitchen. When deciding what needs your attention, don’t forget about your smile! Here’s how to give your teeth a spring cleaning this year.

Step #1: Check Expiration Dates

Did you know that mouthwash, toothpaste, and other oral hygiene products have expiration dates? It’s true! So, if your medicine cabinet or the cupboard under your bathroom sink is packed with products, now is a good time to go through it and see what is and isn’t good. It’s also a good time to make sure you have backups of the essentials, like toothbrushes.

Step #2: Buy a New Toothbrush

Every quarter, you need to replace your toothbrush. After all, old and frayed bristles cannot effectively remove debris from your teeth and gums. If you’re in the market for a new one, then consider upgrading to electric! If you’re unsure which type and brand is best, you can always ask your dental team for their recommendations too.

Step #3: Clean Your Toothbrush Holder

On a weekly basis, you might wipe down your bathroom counter and sink. But when was the last time you cleaned your toothbrush holder? If you can’t quite remember, then make sure to do so before you put your new toothbrush out. That way, the bacteria and germs don’t get onto the new bristles and, in turn, into your mouth.

Step #4: Schedule Your Next Dental Checkup

Even if you are diligent about brushing and flossing, plaque and tartar can build up over time. That’s one of the many reasons it’s important to get a dental checkup and teeth cleaning twice a year. During the cleaning, your dental hygienist will clear away debris from the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth, helping to prevent oral health problems from arising in the future.
